Barbara P. Schmidt, 86, of Lincoln died Friday, January 15, 2021. She was born May 10, 1934 to Nesbitt and Eunice (Howell) Powell in Rochester, NY. She graduated from Drew University in Madison, NJ. At Drew she met seminarian, Jay E. Schmidt of Waverly, NE and they were married at Drew University Chapel in 1956. They were married 63 wonderful loving years when Jay died on March 19, 2020.\n\nBarbara went back to school to get her teaching certificate after her children were all in school. She taught at the elementary school in Hooper, NE for 4 years. After moving to Lincoln, she taught at Arnold Elementary until her retirement in 1996.\n\nLast year she was honored along with her husband to be named the Nebraskans for Peace, Frank LaMere, Peacemaker of the Year. Barbara had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and recently she joined Sacred Winds Native Mission, United Methodist Church.\n\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brothers, Courtney and Robert Powell. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Jim Garver of Lincoln, son Philip of Davey, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Brenda of Nevada, MO, grandsons, Nicholas Deliyannis and his wife, Melissa of Lincoln, Andrew Schmidt of Omaha, Jarod and Tyler Schmidt of Nevada, MO and sister and brother-in-law Judie and Whitey Howard of Aurora, IN.\n\nA Celebration of Life Service will be held for Barbara and Jay at a later date.\n\nMemorials to Nebraskans for Peace, PO Box 83466, Lincoln, NE 68501 or Sacred Winds Native Mission, United Methodist Church, 2400 S. 11th St, Lincoln, NE 68502.
