Elisabeth (Betsey Heermann) Barnes Obituary (1931 - 2014)

Elisabeth Barnes (Betsey Heermann), 82, of Lincoln, passed away, April 27, 2014. Born to Roland and Ruth (Winkler) Shepard on October 2, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Elisabeth graduated from Miss Doherty's private high school and attended the University of Cincinnati, School of Nursing. She took several courses at the University of Maryland and later majored in history at the University of Nebraska. On December 21, 1951 she married Emil F. Heermann, and lived in Guam and San Diego while he attended officer's school in the Navy during the Korean War. In 1966 she moved from Washington D.C. to Lincoln when her husband took a professorship at the University of Nebraska. Elisabeth was an avid reader throughout her entire life who loved politics, real estate, bridge, and animals. She placed a high value on education and continually enjoyed learning. She was a member of the Democratic Party and the Unitarian Church. Elisabeth is survived by her children; Tom (Connie) Heermann, Indianapolis, IN, Ann Heermann and Darla Wanitschke, Lincoln, NE, brothers; Roland Shepard and Linden Shepard, grandchildren; Partick, Katy, Maggie, and Dylan Heermann. Preceded in death by her husband Emil, parents, sisters; Judy Hake, Sally McVay, Sue Miller. No visitation/cremation Memorials in lieu of flowers to the Capital Humane Society
