Following his graduation as a cadet from Texas A&M in 1955, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army in the United States Chemical Corp. He was assigned to the Radiological Defense Laboratory in 1958. Following his service, he obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1963. He worked for Exxon Mobile for several years where he obtained a patent.

In 1962, John married the love of his life, Carol (Hatch). Soon after, he entered the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, and received his Medical Degree in 1970.
